UPDATE ON SEASONAL & H1N1 FLU VACCINE
www.flu.gov and www.flu.nv.gov
We have run out of seasonal flu shots for kids (6 months and older) and parents. Please call the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) Immunization Clinic at (702) 759-0850 to find out when you can go down there and get yourself and your child vaccinated.
We have limited seasonal Flumist doses available for ages 2-49 years and otherwise healthy. The cost of the Flumist is $40 for adults. If you or your child has asthma, the flu mist is probably not for you. The health department does not have seasonal Flumist. Kids under 9 yrs getting their first dose of mist need 2 doses AT LEAST 14 days apart. If you or your child get a seasonal Flumist dose, you will have to wait AT LEAST 14 days before getting an H1N1 mist dose. You CAN get an H1N1 shot anytime with, after or before a seasonal mist dose.
We just received some limited H1N1 shot doses! We now have shots (no H1N1 mist) for kids 6mo all the way up to adults. Per the Health Department, the 2009 H1N1 PRIORITY GROUPS eligible to receive this vaccine are:
- Pregnant women
- People who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age
- Health care and emergency medical services personnel
- Persons between the ages of 6 months and 24 years old
- People ages 25-64 with chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems
For otherwise healthy adults older than 24 years, we will NOT be able to offer the vaccine at this time due to low supply.
We will have an H1N1 shot only clinic on Wednesday December 2, 2009 between 8:30-11:30am. You MUST CALL to schedule an appointment with the nurse only. We will not do any other vaccines at that time. You will not be seeing a doctor. The administration fee for the vaccine is $20 due at the time the shot is given. The health department will give the vaccine for free. Check www.snhd.info for their clinic schedule.
Please check out the link below to read more information about Seasonal and H1N1 vaccines. The basic rule of thumb for spacing between doses of these vaccines is as follows:
Seasonal Flushots: Kids 6 months - under 9 years need 2 doses separated by at least 21 days.
Seasonal Flumist: Kids 2- under 9 years need 2 doses separated by at least 14 days. Kids 9 years and up get 1 dose.
H1N1 shots: Kids 6 months - under 10 years need 2 doses separated by at least 21 days.
H1N1 Flumist: Kids 2-under 10 years need 2 doses separated by at least 14 days. Kids 10 years and up get 1 dose.
Any type of mist doses must be separated from each other by at least 14 days. Mist and shot combos can occur on the same day or with any separation between them.

health and well being.
My website covers a wide range of topics around a central
theme of Healthy Lifestyle Habits. I believe that Healthy
Habits form the foundation of a healthy lifestyle. The
healthy lifestyle is what enables us to live full, productive,
enjoyable lives with fewer medical problems. As a physician,
I would like to see people have less medical problems
than they do currently. As
a pediatrician, I see firsthand the effects of unhealthy
lifestyles and unhealthy habits on our children who
are the future of our country. It is a very frightening
picture. The rates of obesity in this country are skyrocketing
and it is not limited to adults. Our children are becoming
obese and extremely unhealthy. They are starting to
develop “adult diseases” in childhood: obesity,
high blood pressure, type II diabetes, and high cholesterol.
This is a very worrisome trend.
I believe that we
as a society have to make some changes, but that we
as individuals are primarily responsible for making
the changes in our own lives.
As parents, we have a responsibility to our children
not only to teach them Healthy Habits, but also to lead
by our own example. You, your children, and your pediatrician
must work together as a team to make this happen. The
purpose of this website is to provide yet another resource
for people trying to do their best.
